Homestay in アメリカ, Oak Park

Susan and Don have enjoyed hosting international guests from 20 countries for about ten years. Our homestay is not just a room: we share our home and food and our lives with people who are working or studying in Chicago. Each of us lived in homestays while working overseas, and now we create a homestay for others. We enjoy getting to know guests over dinner, and you, us. Our homestay offers a great place to relax, practice English, and be your “home away from home.”
We met in South Korea where we worked for five years in the 1970s. Susan has traveled in SE Asia. Don has lived in Afghanistan for two years and studied Chinese and taught ESL Taiwan for two years.

We are retired and are active volunteers. Susan loves to garden, and extends her interest by volunteering to support the Garfield Park Conservatory nearby. Don loves architecture and supports the Lloyd Wright Trust nearby by giving tours to visitors every week. We both love to cook—and we’re good.

Our home is in Oak Park, adjacent to Chicago. Oak Park attracts architecture buffs to view the many Frank Lloyd Wright designed homes found in the village, alongside homes reflecting other architectural styles. The largest collection of Wright-designed residential properties in the world is in Oak Park. A focus on historic preservation of important architectural styles began in the 1970s and continues; we live in one of three Historic Districts so the neighborhood looks much as it did in 1900.

Our location is very convenient for guests working or studying in Chicago. The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) is a 4 minute walk to the Green Line. Electric trains run every 10-15 minutes; trip time is about minutes (so you won’t need a car). A full-service supermarket, where you can pick up what you want (or just something for lunch), is just down the street.

Keeping fit is also convenient. You may use the public outdoor swimming pool or indoor ice rink, an outdoor running track and sports fields down the street. Gym memberships are available in Oak Park and downtown. You can cycle or run in quiet Oak Park or in Chicago along the 30 km lakefront trail on beautiful Lake Michigan. Chicago has four distinct seasons: Winter daytime temperatures average -1°C - 3°C and snow in January and February. Springtime brings flowers and a lively lakefront. Temperatures start about 10-15°C warming to 21°C by May. Summer temperatures are 26°C - 33°C. October temperatures are around 21°C and gradually drop to 7°C as winter approaches.

We have designed our homestay as an interactive experience. We expect our guests to enjoy Chicago while learning about other guests and us—what we enjoy, what we think, what our plans are. We have cats. Smoking is allowed outside only. Room 2 is NOT a bunkbed--there are 2 twin sized beds on each side of the room. If you find a room mate, the per person cost is less.
